5 Years of Blogging: The Advice That Has Stuck With Me Over The Years

I have had some really great experiences all due to the fact that five years ago I decided to occupy a space on the internet, create this blog and share my views on race and injustice. I never thought this space would become what is and what it will continue to be. I have gained new skills, made a few friends, worked with some great businesses, and I have added public speaking to my list of accomplishments.

I have a lot to be grateful for along this journey, having you come back to this page weekly, sharing my posts on Instagram, commenting on my blog, recommending me for opportunities, it is all appreciated and I want to say Thank you for continuously coming back and supporting me throughout my creative journey.

5 Years of Blogging & The Advice That Has Served Me Well Over The Years

Going to several events over the years and engaging in conversations with loads of different types of creatives who have willingly shared some amazing tips, advice, and information with me. There has been a lot of information that has stuck with me throughout the years that I have found to be really useful.

You Never Know Who Is Watching You

Whether you’re just starting out or several months/years into your journey there is always going to be someone watching what you’re doing. Whether people are silently watching or loudly supporting you, there are opportunities that can come your way because of those around you. Be mindful of the content you’re putting out and make it appealing to both your audience and potential brands/businesses.

Break Everything Down

This is one piece of advice that is useful for just about anyone in any situation. Breaking everything down ensures that you’re making everything manageable. Sometimes we make things more difficult for ourselves, and it isn’t necessary. If you’re creating a blog or any online platform by yourself it is going to be hard enough, make it easier for yourself. Break down your tasks, plan a day for brainstorming, another day for filming, another day for editing, and another day for social media and posting. You do not have to complete everything in a day.

When blogging and content creating stops being fun and enjoyable take a break. Remind yourself of your why, reflect back on your content, ask for advice. Taking that time to refocus and reflect on a regular basis is a great way to balance everything you are doing and everything you want to do.

Come With An Idea First

When you want to pitch to brands, come up with an idea first. By coming up with an idea for the content you are trying to produce first you already give the brand an idea of what it is you can do with your platform. It also shows you actually took time to plan something before just asking for something.

Brands/businesses have plenty of people asking for freebies or payment, so it is important you show from the beginning that you have an idea that works for both you and the brand/business. Also always bear in mind what it is you can do for the brand or business, is there an audience you have, that they don’t have that you can help introduce them to?

Be Strong And Consistent With Your Brand

Having a personal brand, It is really important for my message to be consistent and strong throughout my content-creating journey. Things change but your why and what it is that you want to achieve from your content is something that should be clearly understood by those consuming your content.

Don’t be afraid to take your time to understand your journey, there is no deadline set for you to get to a place of complete understanding of your journey. Everything at the right time!
